We talk about the album briefly on the show, but I've been listening to it a lot over the last couple days. I'm a sucker for comedy albums that are actually well-produced and enjoyable musical efforts in their own right, and that's what TLI produced with this.
I'm still a little let down that there's a lot of recycled SNL material on the disc, but then I listen to the uncensored version of "Natalie's Rap". Something about Natalie Portman saying "motherfucker" soothes any qualms I might have had with the product.
There are tracks that are better than others, but the whole disc warrants at least a few complete runthroughs, and overall it's a great piece of work. My recommendations are (of course) "I'm On A Boat", "Sax Man" (Jack Black singing scat!), "Boombox", and pretty much all the SNL stuff - it may be rehashed but it's still good.
(Oh, and there are some nice references to some of the older skits the group did in their pre-SNL days in a few of the songs, as well as a really funny running gag about Carlos Santana champagne.)
Overall, I'd probably give it a 9/10. Anyone else had a chance to listen? |
